The 3M Littmann Classic III stethoscope is the latest and most advanced version of Littmann stethoscopes, giving healthcare professionals invaluable support in achieving the best results. The Classic III stethoscope is preferred by millions of doctors and medical students for its outstanding performance.
The main features of the Classic III stethoscope include high acoustic sensitivity for superior sound quality, and a versatile double-sided chestpiece fitted with tunable diaphragms. It allows the identification, auscultation and study of heart and lung sounds, and is used for physical assessment, monitoring and patient diagnosis.
The Classic III stethoscope is ideal for monitoring and assessing a wide range of patients. It detects both normal and abnormal sounds and rhythms, making it a reliable instrument in professional care settings such as medical offices, general wards, OB/GYN, outpatient clinics or urgent care units.
Its design allows use on both adult and pediatric patients, making it a versatile instrument for any clinical situation. The adjustable stainless steel chestpiece offers an open- or closed-bell option, while the bell ring keeps the patient comfortable by staying warm against the skin. The eartips are designed to provide optimal comfort and excellent sound sealing.
Compact and lightweight, the Littmann Classic III model is the perfect instrument for clinicians monitoring and assessing children and adults in non-critical settings. Built with strong yet lightweight materials, this stethoscope offers hours of comfortable use.
Representing the first major update to Littmann stethoscopes in 18 years, the Classic III model combines advanced technology with ergonomic design to meet the demanding requirements of healthcare professionals.

Key features of the stethoscope

Adjustable diaphragm on both the adult and pediatric sides of the chestpiece. The pediatric side is useful for small or thin patients, around bandages, and for carotid assessment.

The pediatric side converts into an open bell. Simply remove the one-piece diaphragm and replace it with the non-chill ring.

The one-piece compact diaphragm is easy to attach and easy to clean, since its surface is smooth with no crevices.

Open bell stays protected from dirt and debris by covering it with the small diaphragm.

Next-generation tubing that keeps its shape and flexibility over time. This gives the stethoscope a longer life thanks to improved resistance to skin oils.

Latex-free. No latex, rubber, or phthalate plasticizers are used in the tubing or any other component.
3M's refined adjustable-diaphragm technology adapts to different frequencies simply by adjusting the pressure applied to the chestpiece. Hold the chestpiece with light pressure for low-frequency sounds; press a little harder to hear high-frequency sounds. This time-saving feature lets the user focus on the patient while the diaphragm ensures patient comfort.

Performance optimization / stethoscope troubleshooting

If you experience issues with sound quality on your Littmann stethoscope, we recommend checking the following list:
Eartube alignment - Make sure the
stethoscope's eartubes point forward correctly and the eartips are angled towards the front. If the fit isn't comfortable, adjust the eartubes by holding the metal part and bending both sides simultaneously to bring them closer together or further apart.
Eartip fit - The
Littmannstethoscope comes with eartips in different sizes. It's important to choose the right size for your ear. This is especially true for the soft-sealing eartips.Blockages - Over time, debris can build up inside the
stethoscope's tubing. Make sure to clean and maintain the stethoscope regularly. (See the care tips below)Sealing - Correct sound transmission depends on an airtight seal. Loose parts or damaged tubing can affect sound transmission. Check and replace any damaged or loose parts.
Bell / Diaphragm - On a double-sided
stethoscope, the bell and diaphragm can be opened at any time (this is switched by rotating the chestpiece). Make sure you use the correct side for your needs.
To ensure optimal sound quality and to extend the life of the stethoscope, it's important to follow the complete care and cleaning instructions provided with your Littmann stethoscope.
Stethoscope care and cleaning
Proper care and cleaning of your Littmann stethoscope will extend its life and ensure optimal sound quality. Complete care and cleaning instructions are available in the manual provided with your stethoscope.
Disinfection - It's recommended to disinfect the stethoscope after every use. To do this, wipe the stethoscope with a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution and place it in an antimicrobial pouch for full sterilization. This process takes only a few minutes and protects both you and the patient against viruses and bacteria.
DO NOT immerse the stethoscope in ANY liquid and DO NOT subject it to any other sterilization process.
Usage environment - Avoid exposing the stethoscope to extreme temperatures (very hot or cold), oils, or solvents.
Tubing - PVC tubing can become brittle over the long term if continuously exposed to the lipids found in human skin. If you prefer to wear the stethoscope around your neck, it's recommended to position it over your collar. For effective protection, use a dedicated pouch for transporting and storing the stethoscope.
The 3M Littmann Learning Institute App
Download the app to your device from the App Store or Google Play and try it free for 30 days (if you don't already own a Littmann stethoscope). If you own a Littmann stethoscope, enter its serial number found on the chestpiece to register. The app contains updated information from the two educational CDs: "Introduction to Heart Sounds" and "Lung Sounds Made Easy".
Included accessories
